From the President

Our volunteers are starting 2024 with energy and enthusiasm and accomplishing so much it's hard to keep up with the numbers!  We're reaching potential voters in new places and in new ways thanks to all of you.  And there's more to come in this year with primaries, local elections, potential runoffs and the fall presidential election.

Thank you to everyone who attended or donated to the Circle Arts Fundraiser especially Bonnie Leitch who coordinated the benefit. These funds will go directly to the printing costs of providing nonpartisan voting information materials.  Our all volunteer organization has no administrative overhead so donors can feel confident that their contributions go to empowering voters.

Join us as a member or a supporter.  We are grateful for your participation and support that makes so much possible!

More Volunteering Opportunities Ahead!

Pictured above and below are some of the many ways member volunteers and community partners contributed to our mission so far in 2024. Some prepared packets for high school registration drives, sold tickets to the Circle Arts Benefit Performance, helped distribute information and register voters at events, ran mock election activities for those too young to vote yet, spoke to students and/or reviewed registration forms and delivered them to local election offices.

We are planning more volunteer opportunities in the months ahead and welcome you to join the team. Watch this newsletter and lwvcomal.org for future events and activities.

LWVCA Hosts March Program on AI and Deep Fakes

Democracy is challenged when technology and disinformation leave voters confused about who and what to believe.  Tuesday, March 19, the LWV Comal Area will host Professor Dale Blasingame discussing what voters need to be aware of  when reviewing information and how we can combat mis- and disinformation.

Those interested can attend in person at the New Braunfels Public Library, 700 E. Common St., New Braunfels, 6 to 7:30 p.m.; watch via a Zoom live stream at

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86098659369?pwd=QzVHOUNTRG45S0lLbTk2U2lEY2ptUT09, Meeting ID: 860 9865 9369, Passcode: 673106; or watch a recording on our YouTube channel @lwvcomalarea7096 after the event.  "We're thrilled to have Prof. Blasingame address this topic which is generating concern among voters.  His presentation in 2022 re: media literacy was full of useful tips  for evaluating online information and we're looking forward to learning more, " commented LWVCA President Jerrie Champlin.

Dale Blasingame is an associate professor of practice in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University in San Marcos where he received the 2017 Presidential Excellence Award for Teaching and the 2023 Presidential Excellence Award for Service.  He is part of the Digital Media Innovation faculty and teaches courses that introduce students to different aspects of how technology is changing journalism, media and marketing.  Before transitioning to TSU, Blasingame was a television news producer.  He spent nine years at WOAI-TV in San Antonio where he won two Lone Star Emmy awards and was nominated for a third.

MLK Association Announces 2024 Scholarship
and Henry E. Ford Award

After inclement weather prevented the annual march on January 15, the New Braunfels MLK Association rescheduled the celebration to February 3.  The LWVCA and community partner BAAC Delta Sigma Theta Sorority distributed nonpartisan voter information and registration and provided a mock election activity for those under 18 at the event which was a moving and inspiring start to Black History Month.  The MLK Association also announced that it was accepting applications for its Non-Traditional Scholarship and nominations for its Henry E. Ford Achievement Award.
