Texas Critters Introduce Under 18s to Voting

LWV Comal Area opened a mock Texas Critter Election for under 18 year olds at the Earth Day Celebration at Headwaters at the Comal April 22, 2023.  The election continued at the New Braunfels CycloVIVA Festival April 30 and will finish at New Braunfels Pridefest June 10 and the Juneteenth Celebration at Westside Community Center on June 17.  Stop by our table and join in the fun!

Any person under 18 can cast a ballot for one of three Texas State Critters by drawing it or writing the name on a vote form and placing it in the ballot box.  Each voter receives a special sticker.  The three candidates are the State Flying Mammal, the Mexican Free-tailed Bat; the State Reptile, the Texas Horned Toad/Lizard; and the State Large Mammal, the Texas Longhorn.  Results will be published after June 20.  Currently the election is very tight and no candidate has reached a 50% majority.  A runoff may be needed in the fall to determine a final winner.

"It's a fun introduction to the concept of voting appropriate  for young children and teenagers that gets them engaged in thinking about selecting candidates and casting ballots", commented LWVCA President Jerrie Champlin. "With older teens, we can speak with them about registering for the first time when they become eligible".

Comal Area Leaguers Elect 2023-204 Board

Thirty members of the LWV Comal Area met May 10, to elect new officers, review the past year and approve the budget for 2023-24.  They welcomed guest speaker Ryan Spencer, the first Executive Director of the Comal County Conservation Alliance who outlined his background, the League's history of supporting conservation and our local partnership with the CCCA..

President Jerrie Champlin reminded attendees that LWVCA will be starting its 30th year empowering voters and defending democracy on June 1, 2023; and that more volunteers are needed to sustain our current level of services to the community.  She summarized the accomplishments of the past 29th year; presented two special Super Supportive Spouse Awards to nonmembers Eric Henchal and Matt Zengler; and announced that the Board is honoring Founding Member Jan Estes with a Democracy Defender Superstar Award for her 15 years of coordinating the annual Benefit Performance with the Circle Arts Theatre in New Braunfels.  In closing remarks, Champlin highlighted the importance of the League's Nonpartisan and DEI Policies in all our activities and in addressing new challenges coming from the 88th Legislative Session.
