LWVCA and IDEA Forum Host Affordable Housing Forum

by Cassie Wedding, Publicity Director

A public forum on affordable housing co-hosted by the LWV Comal Area and the New Braunfels Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness (IDEA) Forum is scheduled January 25, 2023, 7pm at the McKenna Center, 801 W. San Antonio Street, Braunfels, Texas 78130.

The meeting will be livestreamed on Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86098659369?pwd=QzVHOUNTRG45S0lLbTk2U2lEY2ptUT09 (ID: 860 9865 9369, passcode: 673106) and on the LWVCA’s Facebook page @LWVTexas.  A recording will be posted on the LWVCA’s YouTube channel @lwvcomalarea7096.

Director of Economic and Community Development of the City of New Braunfels Jeff Jewell will discuss what the housing affordability challenge is, why cities should try to address it, how extensive the issue has become in New Braunfels, and what the city and its stakeholders are currently doing to address it. According to Jewell, “In nearly every community survey or discussion around the matter, housing affordability continues to be an issue citizens care about. Safe, affordable housing for families is almost always at the epicenter of what makes a stable community.”

“The IDEA Forum’s 2021 community survey identified affordable housing as the primary issue of concern for New Braunfels area residents and we consider it an essential part of appropriate planning for growth in our area,” commented LWVCA President Jerrie Champlin.

The purpose of the IDEA Forum is to examine racial, economic, and social inequities and citizen access issues within our community, to promote citizen dialogue and cooperation, and to develop solutions for a lasting understanding of all groups within the community.  For more information, go to NB IDEA Forum.

The League of Women Voters is a 501(c)3, nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. LWV never supports or opposes candidates for office, or political parties. For more information, go to About.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

We are ready to register voters!  12 Comal Area members and friends were certified as Volunteer Deputy Registrars (VDR) for 2023-24 Jan. 9. Want to register voters in Texas?  Details about certification are at Volunteer Deputy Registrars. VDRs will be needed at our Get-Out-The-Vote events and for our high school voter drives in coming months. Look for events on the lwvcomal.org website and ensure that you have filled in your interests to receive emailings about opportunities.  Note: when you renew your membership, update your profile interests.

Comal Area is also accepting entries for the 2023 Art Poster Contest now through Feb. 28.  This contest is open to any K-8th grader residing or attending school in Comal & Guadalupe Counties, and we're eager to see what the young artists come up with!

LWV Texas Annual Fundraising Dinner Highlights 2023 Lobby Days

You're cordially invited to enjoy an evening with the League of Women Voters of Texas, supporters, allies, and other civic advocates to celebrate the work of the League and community partners working toward the same goals: Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.

The League of Women Voters of Texas' 2023 annual fundraising dinner, "Women Power Texas," will be held on Monday, February 27, 2023 at the UT Etter-Harbin Alumni Center in Austin, Texas. The funds raised from this year's event will be used to support the League's mission throughout the upcoming year.  Find more information and purchase tickets at Women Power Texas.

This year's event coincides with LWV Lobby Days Feb. 27-28 in Austin, an event at which the League and other civic advocates come together to discuss priority issues in the upcoming legislative session. The LWV Comal Area is organizing a delegation to attend and meet  with local representatives at the Capitol. If you are interested in participating, please contact Jerrie Champlin.
