Women's (In)Equality Day Rally

In the July newsletter, we invited you to a Women's Equality Day Rally on August 26, when we commemorate passage of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution which granted some women the right to vote and  when we have celebrated the accomplishments women have made and signaled hope that we are moving towards full equality.

However, this year, LWVUS will not be celebrating. More than 100 years since women won the right to vote, women have fewer rights than they have had in decades. Women's rights are under attack and it is clear that we are far from equal in our democracy. Instead, we are relabeling the day as Women's Inequality Day to send a message that the recent attacks on women are taking us backward as a nation.  We are launching a campaign calling on our lawmakers to restore and protect the rights of women.

Democracy depends on equal rights for all people.  Generations before us fought tirelessly to gain and protect the rights we have today. Losing our right to reproductive choice opens the door to the loss of other freedoms like marriage equality, contraception and the right to engage in private, consensual intimacy.    We are in a fight to make sure everyone has the power to control their own bodies, lives and futures.  We will not back down.

Join the LWV-Comal Area and community partners on Friday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Main Plaza in New Braunfels to rally for human rights. Please note, this is a nonpartisan rally and we ask that participants honor that nonpartisan spirit by not wearing or displaying any clothing or signs that support or oppose any political party or candidate.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

The LWV is launching a campaign calling on our lawmakers to restore and protect our rights.  Our Get-Out-The-Vote efforts are more important than ever to remind voters, especially new and lapsed voters, that their vote counts and to make a plan to vote.  Join us on Aug. 26 for the Women's (In)Equality Day Rally to stand for human rights and demand that our legislators protect our rights!

That  season has already started for our Voter Services volunteers with 6 Comal ISD Employee Convocations now through Aug. 19. Members can check and sign up for more volunteer opportunities coming up in Sept. on our new website Volunteering page (see below for more information).  Anyone can see our events on the website Events Calendar, and we welcome nonmember supporters and community partners to participate.

Save the date for our Fall membership Meeting, Sunday,  Sept. 11, 2:30 p.m. at the New Braunfels Public Library.  I hope to see you there!

 And Volunteering Just Got Easier!

A new "Volunteering" page in the For Members section of the lwvcomal.org website makes signing up for a volunteer opportunity easier than ever.  Click on Volunteering on the For Members drop down menu to see the current list and choose an opportunity. Please note, you must log in to see the list.  When you click on "Volunteer Yourself" on the right hand side of each opportunity, the specific times and tasks will pop up. After you select a volunteer spot, the coordinator will receive a message that you signed up and you will get a confirmation email.

It doesn’t matter if you signed up to be part of a special committee or not, all members are encouraged to sign up for whatever activities matches their interests and schedules.  Not a member or running into problems using the new feature?  You can still volunteer by contacting us via email, phone call or text. As we approach the fall elections, LWV- Comal Area will be working hard to register and inform voters, and to get out the vote. Everyone's help is needed and appreciated.  Watch the Volunteering page for more opportunities to make a difference in our community!

Voter List Maintenance Project Kicks Off

by Daphne Spraitzar, Vice -President for Program

The LWV Texas moved forward with the planned study of the state voter list maintenance process that was approved at this year's biennial convention.  It's now a project under the League's Voting Rights issue advocacy with Pam Gaskin, LWV-Houston serving as the LWVTX Board leader and Robin Lederer, LWV-Dallas President-Elect as the state chair.

The study will be conducted in two phases: 1) establish or maintain contacts with county election officials and 2) assess the results of the implementation of the new 2021 statutory requirements and document problems or benefits.  The focus this fall is preparation for the November midterm elections particularly  a new address confirmation process for voters registered at addresses that do not correspond to a residence created by SB111 and voters on the suspense list which includes voters with unconfirmed addresses.  Suspended voters are still registered and have the same rights as any other voter but they may be required to fill out a Statement of Residence at the polls before being permitted to vote.  A priority of the project is to get the word out this fall to  local Leagues, community partners and those voters likely to be affected  by these processes so all can take action prior to the election to ensure they are registered, not on the suspense list, and that their addresses have been correctly updated.

Many voters may not be aware that their registration has been cancelled or that they have been placed on a suspense list.  Other voters may not be aware of the new address confirmation process.  Additionally , if a voter remains on the suspense list on Nov. 30 following a second general election for state or county officers that occurs after the voter is placed on the suspense list, the voter registrar is required to cancel the voter's registration. We can expect state officials  to purge a large number of registered voters in December 2022 as they have done in previous cycles.
