FROM THE PRESIDENT

There are so many to thank this month. Thank you to everyone who attended the 2022 Annual meeting and to our generous members who donated enough to cover the cost of the refreshments!  I'm thrilled that we will be starting this next year with a full Board of Directors. Thank you Kristen Coppock for stepping up at the meeting to complete the slate.  Thank you to Karen Douglas, Sheila Pattison and Cassie Wedding for saying yes when our incredible Nominating Committee contacted you. These 4 new Board members all joined the LWV-CA during the past year.  Thank you to Daphne Spraitzar and Roxanna Deane, and our Nominating Committee Robin Engel and Jenny Ayala for signing on for another term.

Thank you to retiring Board members Connie Born and Montana Rindahl for all you've contributed this past year.  A special thanks to Founding Member  and outgoing Membership Director Gloria Suarez Sasser who is retiring from the Board after many years and positions in the local and state Leagues that have shaped who we are today.

I closed the meeting with these words from Thurgood Marshall that feel like a mantra we can use as we head into another challenging year:

Where you see wrong or inequality or injustice, speak out, because this is your country. This is your democracy. Make it. Protect it. Pass it on.

Let’s get out there and pass it on!

-Jerrie Champlin

2022 ANNUAL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

Thirty members and guest Guadalupe County Elections Administrator Lisa Hayes gathered at the McKenna Center May 11, to celebrate our League's accomplishments during the past year, present several awards  and elect new officers.

From June 1, 2021, through April 30, 2022, LWV-CA registered over 740 voters,  contacted over 2400 voters person to person and distributed 11,000 printed Voters Guides and elections flyers. We hosted or participated in over 45 events, including redistricting workshops with local community leaders, candidate forums and educational programs that over 3,000 attended or viewed online. Social media posts and our new website were viewed or visited over 20,000 times; digital advertising reached over 100,000 area residents.  All accomplished by 50 League members and 45 non-member community partners who volunteered over 1900 hours.

The 2022 Educating for Democracy Award to Herald Zeitung Reporter Will Wright was announced in recognition of his contribution to empowering voters with  coverage of local government and the impact of our state government on local voters.  Comal County and Guadalupe County Elections Offices were honored for outstanding services to voters.  President Jerrie Champlin gave surprise appreciation awards to members Gail Groves for Frequent VDR Appearances; Sheila Pattison and her children Julianna and Luke Pattison-Zengler for Family Engagement; Karen Douglas and Syble Johnson for Best Forum Questions and Best Rally Signs; Joyce Doyle for Community Events Guidance; and Milda Scott for Best Pet Pictures.

LWVTX TO STUDY VOTER LIST MAINTENANCE PROCESS

by Daphne Spraitzar,  V-P for Program

At the LWV-Texas state convention last month, delegates approved a new program study on the adequacy of the voter list maintenance process required by the 87th Texas Legislature.  Our local League is forming a committee to participate in the study.

In Phase One, under the direction of the state League Study Group, LWV-Comal Area will form a committee to (1) establish or maintain contacts with the Comal and Guadalupe County election officials; (2) call attention to county efforts undertaken (letters to the editor, newsletter, OpEds); (3) identify ways to assure accurate voter rolls that do not disenfranchise voters.  In Phase Two, LWV-Comal Area committee will assess the results of the implementation of new 2021 statutory requirements in Comal and Guadalupe Counties, and document problems or benefits.

At our local Annual Meeting May 11, members readopted our local Program on Billboards and Land Use.  For more information on these positions go to Billboard Position and Land Use Planning Position.

The 55th National Convention of the LWV-US will be held June 23 - 26, 2022 at the Sheraton Downtown Denver (CO) & Online.

We invite our League members to save these dates and plan to join fellow passionate and engaged League leaders for our biennial national gathering. For more information go to  55th National Convention.
