From The President
Over the last month, I have heard from several voters who voiced their appreciation for the voter services and information we provide.  So here's a big thank you to all of our volunteers who've been registering voters, answering voters' questions, collecting and entering candidate information, and delivering election information and Voters Guides! It's our volunteers like you who put the power in empowering voters!

The return to more  in-person activities has put some exciting events on the calendar:  a return of our annual Circle Arts Fundraiser (details below) on April 2, and an in-person state LWV convention April 8-10.  We need a few more delegates!  I encourage any member to join us in Austin, TX.  It's an opportunity to network and exchange ideas with other Leaguers from across the state, attend interesting workshops and have some fun with other democracy defenders! Financial assistance to cover registration and hotel costs is available.  Please call me at 830-643-4657 if interested.

LWVTX is collecting examples of difficulties voters have encountered due to the new election laws. If you have examples to share, please contact me!

Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Jerrie Champlin

The Business of Journalism- What Consumers Should Know

by Roxanna Deane

The chart above shows the current news landscape.  It seemed simple to apply journalistic standards when newspapers were the primary source of information.  But now there are thousands of content creators on a multitude of platforms.  How do each make money?  How can consumers determine who to trust.? What does the future hold?

Join in a presentation and discussion of this topic with Professor Dale Blasingame.  The program will be  via Zoom on Wednesday, February 16th, at 7 p.m. meeting link (Meeting ID: 860 9865 9369, Passcode: 673106) or Facebook Live @LWVComal.

SAVE THE DATE!

New Braunfels' Circle Arts Theatre has scheduled the Saturday, April 2, 2022, performance of Clue: On Stage as a benefit for the LWV-Comal Area!  To raise funds for our 2022 Get-Out-The-Vote  and voter registration activities, we want to sell out the house.  Tickets will be available from LWV-CA Board members and on the Circle Arts website starting March 1.  You can reserve tickets now by contacting Jerrie by email at jbaralin@gvtc.com or text 830-643-4657.
Reflections from Vice-President for Organization Connie Born, Part 2

Four months before the national LWV was founded, the League of Women Voters Texas (LWVTX) was formed on October 19, 1919, at the St. Anthony Hotel in San Antonio when the Texas Equal Suffrage Association was dissolved to reorganize for a new purpose. Over the last century, LWVTX has

  • Urged women to pay poll taxes
  • Conducted citizenship schools
  • Held Get-Out-the-Vote campaigns
  • Issued a “Voter’s Calendar”
  • Queried political candidates and published the results
  • Formed a consortium that lobbied for women’s welfare
  • In the 1920s, lobbied for legislation to establish a minimum wage for women
  • Lobbied for maternity/infant care, prohibiting child labor, reforming the state prison system, improving rural education and giving women equal representation as delegates to national party conventions.
  • In 1949, secured legislation ensuring increased integrity of the secret ballots for Texans
  • In 1954, worked on a constitutional amendment enabling women to serve on juries
  • In the 50s, supported establishment of a system of family courts, urged elimination of legal discrimination against women based on marital status  and compiled a “Know Your State” survey that became a high school and college textbook, Texas Constitutional Review
  • In later years, promoted the need for a revised state constitution, studied the selection and tenure process for appellate judges, and the establishment of a permanent voter-registration system.

The League is known for its involvement in advocacy and the issues it has defended and supported. League members who are interested in supporting a particular issue are invited to become an Issue Chair. These individuals serve a two-year term beginning and ending June 1 of even numbered years. New Chairs for open positions are recruited in the summer and fall following convention and are trained on how to advocate and write testimony. The Issue Chairs follow the bills related to their issue ion the Texas Legislature Online and write periodic blog entries on the website Issue Page.

From the beginning, LWVTX has remained a grassroots, member-directed organization. It is affiliated with the national organization through some shared finances, common goals, and structure, but establishes its own programs. The LWVTX website serves as an invaluable resource for many functions within the League. I highly recommend that members review the section on Advocacy and Issues to understand the scope of the League’s advocacy and attend the biennial convention scheduled April 8-10, 2022, to connect with League members across the state.
