The votes in the 2026 Pet Election Primaries have been tallied. A total 145 votes were cast in the Cat Party and Dog Party races.  They were both very close, as Randy the Ragdoll, Benny the Bengal, Yorkie the Yorkshire, and Bella the Beagle were all great candidates.
 
Randy won the Cat Primary and Yorkie won the Dog Primary.  Both candidates thanked their opponents for running hard-fought, respectful campaigns.
 
Vote in the General Election!
Randy will face Yorkie in the General Election starting at events in late August.  It is rumored that an independent candidate, a turtle, has filed as an independent candidate for the general election.  Stay tuned!!!

LWVCA in Action 
VRA Anniversary Event and Voter Registration: LWVCA members attended the Every Vote Counts: Celebrating the Voting Rights Act of 1965 event at San Marcos Public Library on August 8. One of the speakers, LWV Austin's Valerie DeBill, discussed voter registration issues and answered many audience questions about voting issues.  Valerie is pictured here with LWVCA's Lily Barucky. 
VRA Anniversary Event (San Marcos): LWV Texas former President and current board member Joyce LeBombard also spoke at the August 8 event in San Marcos. Her talk included a discussion of the Voting Rights Act, voting rights from a historical perspective, and current issues. Juneteenth 2026 Youth Mock Election: Membership Director Angela Freeman assisted local youth with voting in LWVCA's popular Pet Election primaries during the New Braunfels Juneteenth Celebration.  The Juneteenth Celebration was one of many locations for Pet Election voting. We enjoyed meeting area youth and chatting with adults about voter registration and other voting issues.
Juneteenth 2026 High School Engagement: Student volunteer Luke Zengler and fellow Unicorns chatted with LWVCA members about issues such as voter registration and serving as poll workers.

From the President
  • Area Youth Need You! I hope everyone is having a great summer!! We are currently gearing up for high school fall voter registration season. This year, we are reaching out to new schools in New Braunfels ISD, Marion, and SCUCISD. We are hoping to add some drives to our current 11 schools we currently service.

    If you are interested in helping me contact fine school folks or helping plan voter registration events, email me at president@lwvcomail.org. Feel free to nudge your fabulous non-League members to volunteer as well. Much of the planning work can be done from the comfort of your home. Later, we will post VDR voter registration opportunities. The last day to register for the November 3 election is October 5. 

  • Partner Voter Education Events on Aug. 22 and Sept. 13 in Seguin. We are excited to partner with local LULAC and NAACP chapters this fall.  On Aug. 22, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., LWVCA youth empowerment speaker Mandy Speights will lead the presentation and discussion on voting basics and voter registration issues at the Seguin Public Library. 

    On Sept. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m., President of Programs Ruth Solis will continue the engaging voter education discussion at the Seguin Public Library.  For kids, the popular Pet Election will be accepting young voters from 0 to 18 years old.  

  • Check the Volunteering Page Weekly. Groups are continuing to contact LWVCA to assist with voter registration, voter education and candidate forums. And we are continuing to add events and volunteering opportunities.  Please check the volunteering page weekly.  It is linked below.

  • Grant News! We are receiving an LWVEF grant for youth civic education. Yay!  We also applied for a general grant up to $1500 for our upcoming fall activities.  I'll keep you posted and hope to have a happy announcement by the Fall Membership Meeting.

May Annual Meeting Highlights 
Democracy Warrior Award: Milda Scott was recognized at the Annual Meeting with a special President's Award. Milda is LWVCA's 2026 Democracy Warrior.  The award recognizes Milda's selfless leadership of our local Vote411.org effort and her tireless fight to give voters the tools to fully participate in our democracy.

 

Unicorn Award for League Innovation: Anne Gulick, our outgoing Membership Director was awarded a special President's Award. The Unicorn Award for League Innovation recognizes Anne's magical dedication to engaging the LWVCA membership and innovating voter services activities.
 
 
Roxanna Deane Honored for 17 years of LWVCA Board Service: LWVCA honored Roxanna Deane for 17 years of exceptional service on our board. Comal Conservation Executive Director Ryan Spencer and LWVCA President Sheila Pattison highlighted Roxanna's leadership, mentorship, and service to the League, local nonprofits and the community.  Individual members donated over $900 to Comal Conservation in Roxanna's honor.

How can you help register people to vote?
Become a VDR!
The League of Women Voters Comal Area have a strong presence in both Comal and Guadalupe counties. The LWV name holds a centuries old reputation for Getting Out the Vote. One of the best ways to help Get out the Vote is becoming a VDR, or Volunteer Deputy Registrar. You can pass out information, talk to eligible voters and engage with people at any GOTV table, but if you become a VDR you can register people to vote.

We need as many VDRs manning our volunteer tables ahead of this important midterm in Texas. 

Ways you can become a VDR:

Comal County conducts its training with in-person classes on the second Tuesday of every month at 10:00 AM.  Classes are  limited to 10 students per session and are held at the Comal County Elections Office, 396 N. Seguin Ave, New Braunfels, TX 78130.  Registration is required. Register HERE or  call (830) 221-1352.

Guadalupe County conducts its training by reservation on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 3 pm at the Guadalupe County Elections Office, 215 S. Milam, Seguin, TX 78155.  Please call (830) 303-6363 to register.

Bexar County has three options for VDR training and certification: virtual training via zoom, online, and in person. The Bexar County Elections page has all the information.

Hays County appoints Volunteer Deputy Registrars after you review the Texas Secretary of States's (SOS) approved training materials at the SOS web site. When you feel adequately trained and prepared go to their office at 712 South Stagecoach Trail, Suite 1012, San Marcos, TX 78666 Monday-Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.  No appointment required. Review the study guide, pass the open- book exam, and receive your certificate of appointment and supply packet. Call (512) 393-7310 for more information.

Travis County Tax Office offers online training and testing.   https://campsite.bio/tcvdr.


You can receive reciprocity in any TX county after receiving your certification by contacting the county registrar of the desired county you would like to register people to vote in. 

The purpose of Get Out the Vote (GOTV) activities is to provide voters with all the information they need to participate in an election and to transform non-voters into voters. The League believes that Democracy thrives when every eligible citizen votes.
