Saenz-Rodriguez Receives
2026 NB MLK Ford Award
LWVCA and LULAC member Maria Saenz-Rodriguez was honored as the 2026 Henry E. Ford Achievement Award recipient on January 19. The New Braunfels MLK Association presented the award to her at the New Braunfels Civic Center after the 2026 MLK march.

Each year, the NB MLK Association recognizes amazing individuals in our community who are committed to advocacy, education, community service, and leadership. Ms. Saenz-Rodriguez has exemplified the ideals of the Henry E. Ford Achievement Award through her boots-on-the-ground community service, individually and through multiple community organizations.  Her best work rarely sees the spotlight.

Local scholarship recipients, high school voter registration programs, citizenship class students, and many others have benefitted from Ms. Seanz-Rodriguez's kind, yet tenacious work.  She also has worked tirelessly to promote unity and cultural understanding in our community. We congratulate Maria Senz-Rodriguez and thank her for her many years of service to this community.

The results of the 2025 Texas Critter Election are in!  The Owl is the winner.
Vote Totals:
Owl 57
Hawk 48
Other 8
When asked for a comment, the Owl said, "Whoooo whooo is the winner? I am the winner!!!  Thank you to all who voted for me!"
The Hawk thanked kids for voting. She vowed to run in a future election.  The 2026 kids' mock election is the Pet Election, with primaries for both the Dog Party and the Cat Party. The mock election primaries will visit libraries and other locations on selected dates through the spring.

LWVCA in Action
Yay, Maria! LWVCA's Past President Jerry Champlin, President Sheila Pattison, and MLK March Liaison Tania Rickett congratulate  Maria Saenz-Rodriguez on winning the prestigious Henry E. Ford Achievement Award.
MLK March: The League continued its tradition of supporting the annual march sponsored by our community partner, the New Braunfels MLK Association. For more march-related photos, check out the photo album at LWVComal.org.
GOTV & Youth Engagement: LWVCA's GOTV table at the 2026 MLK march event featured the 2026 Kids' Pet Election Primaries. Members also registered voters and provided nonpartisan March 3 Primary information.
Sharing Ideas and Fellowship: League members discussed the upcoming primaries and other topics at a recent brunch, one of two membership events organized by our fabulous Membership chair, Anne Gulick.
Youth and the Arts: Student member Juliana Zengler invited NBHS alumni friends to the League's 2026 Circle Arts Theatre benefit performance of Southern Fried Funeral. They all enjoyed the show.
Volunteers Rock! LWVCA volunteers Matt and Luke Zengler strike a pose after the Circle Arts benefit performance. They are two of many spouse and family LWVCA volunteers.
From the President
  • March 3 Primary Early Voting Begins February 17: The 2026 primaries are set for March 3, with early voting from February 17 through 27. The weekend of February 21 and 22 are the only weekend voting dates.
  • GOTV, Voter Guides and Information: Our volunteers have been busy manning GOTV tables and distributing the popular LWV voter guides.  The voter guides are available at local libraries and community locations.  Polling locations, poll hours and candidate information can be accessed electronically at the above information link. Local candidate responses can be found at vote411.org. Check the calendar for upcoming GOTV tables scheduled at the area libraries and other locations.
  • High School Voter Registration Drives.  We registered over 400 students at voter registration drives this semester. Thanks to Ada Conlan and our many volunteers who made that possible. We hope to have at least one more high school drive in March before the voter registration deadlines for the May local elections.
  • Successful Circle Arts Fundraiser: The Circle Arts benefit performance was a lot of fun. We are touched by the strong community support. LWVCA raised over $1500 from the event.  Thanks to our Circle Arts fundraiser coordinator Bonnie Leitch, the LWVCA board, Circle Arts, the cast and crew, and our supporters.  And congratulations to our top ticket seller, Kristen Coppock!
Happy voting,
Sheila

LWVCA Kids' Pet Election: Dog, Cat Primaries Have Begun
LWVCA is currently administering the primaries for its 2026 Pet Election. Voting is open to kids under 18 and will take place at designed League voter information tables in the area.
Joint Primaries: For the convenience of the voters, the Dog Party and the Cat Party have agreed to hold joint primaries.
Graphic Design: Student member Juliana Zengler designed the signs and ballots for the election.  To help our youngest voters distinguish the candidates, she added a small thumbnail picture next to each candidate's name and check box. Due to election security issues, the ballots are not reproduced for this article.
Election Schedule: The primaries will run through this spring.  The primary votes will then be counted, and the general election candidates will be named. It is rumored that an independent candidate will join the winning party candidates for the general election.
